Artist's Comments

Ulysses or Odysseus a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey . Odysseus also plays a key role in Homer's Iliad (where he got the idea of his famous Trojan horse trick) and other works in the Epic Cycle.

King of Ithaca, husband of Penelope, father of Telemachus, and son of Laërtes and Anticlea, Odysseus is renowned for his guile and resourcefulness, and is hence known by the epithet Odysseus the Cunning.
I depicted him with the nymph Calypso an other important character of the Odyssey.
Calypso was the daughter of Atlas and she felt in love with Ulysses. Thus, in the island of Ogygia, her kingdom, she charmed him and held him captive as her lover for seven years, promising him immortality if he agreed to stay…. But Ulysses decided to leave to return to Ithaca to Penelope…
The island, , was home to the nymph who held On behalf of Athena, Zeus intervened and sent Hermes to tell Calypso to let him go.
Odysseus duly departed on a small raft, furnished by Calypso with provisions of water, wine and food, only to be hit by a storm from his old enemy Poseidon.

Critiques

:iconelegaer:
I've not done many of these critiques, but I wanted to comment properly on this. It's great, I love all the symbolism you've managed to get in there. Love Charybdis and I love the way Odysseus's cloak forms such a wonderful flowing border and statement in the picture.

The one thing that confuses me in this picture, however, is the line separating the rocks from the white surrounding Odysseus. I don't know why, but it seems to separate the two sides of the pictures too much, you almost have to refocus looking at the rocks part and then at the Odysseus part. Does that make sense? Hopefully. I'm not sure whether you were meaning that to happen or not!!
