This illustration has been inspired by the novel “Cuore di Ferro” by the Italian writer Alfredo Colitto (more information at: [link]). “Cuore di Ferro” can be literary translated as “Iron Heart” (but the English title of the book is “Inquisition”). It is one of the best novels I’ve read in the last year. It’s an historical thriller set in Bologna during the middle age when this beautiful city was flourishing thanks to the oldest and most important university in the world. If you like the Name of the Rose by Uberto Eco or the Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, then you will love this novel!! The main character is a famous doctor, Mondino de Liuzzi ([link]) who is famous for his medical treatise “Anothomia”. The books has been already translated in English (Inquisition), French (L’Élisir des Templiers), Spanish (Corazon de Hierro), German (Das Geheimnis der Alchimistin), Portuguese (Coração de Ferro) and Thurkish (Demìr Yürek) thus I strongly suggest you to read it! Alfredo Colitto has also written other two very nice books with the same character: I discepoli del Fuoco Il libro dell’Angelo I like the novel also because Bologna is my city and I’ve very proud to have studied in its University and to be a professor there.
PS: the background represent the Two Towers of Bologna surrounded by other medieval-like buildings. Bologna was full of towers! You can see a reconstruction here: [link] You can see an image of the Two Towers at: [link] by [link]
thank you so much! and sorry for the late reply... I've very little time to dedicate to art and DA since lately I'm overwhelmed by my job at the university.
This composition reminds me of current movie posters. So many meaningful things happen in the canvas. I always adore how you compose your illustrations. There is movement, details, mysterious characters... It's just beautiful. I love how the stars in the town-scape fade into ink spatters. Lovely details. Love it.
